MFN Status: Pakistan and India treading the right path

The grant of Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India by Pakistan is the latest episode in the improving relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, and the step is in the right direction on the path, which the two states have treaded since the tragic incident of Mumbai attacks in 2008. Pakistan's decision is an important leap towards normalization of trade ties between the two countries and majority of people on both sides of the border and across the globe has welcomed the step.

Mystery behind timing of acts of terror in India

It has been a mind-boggling scenario for me that most of the terror incidents in India have taken place at crucial times for both India and Pakistan.

Talks, peace process can help save lost paradise

Millions of pages have already been written about the estrangement between Pakistan and India. In the nutshell: the British left the subcontinent in a rush and did not plan the things, as it should have been. The partition plan was devised and based on principles of two-nation theory, which envisaged that there were two nations in the sub-continent, Muslims and Hindus. The partition of subcontinent led to a mass migration (about 10 million people) and more than a million deaths. You can imagine the bad blood and sense of rift that left stains and strains in the relations between the two South Asian neighbours.

Let's make this peace process genuinely irreversible

When the Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and his Indian counterpart Dr. Manmohan Singh shook hands at the Mohali Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh, India, on March 30, during the semi-final of the world cup between the two South Asian giants, it was not merely a photo session, but it seemed like they were setting off another round of cricket diplomacy that marked a cautious return of good will. This is perhaps the third time the two nations are using the game to bridge their differences.

Resumption of dialogue process a good omen for regional peace

The talks between the Foreign Secretaries of Pakistan and India at Thimpu, Bhutan in the first week of February 2011 have been held in cordial atmosphere and both sides now look forward to resuming dialogue on different contentious issues.  Pakistan Foreign Minister is likely to undertake his visit to India in March and April this year, which is likely to yield more positive results for the two nations.

New Delhi rulers - frustrating administration of justice

It's always guilty that must be punished, no matter who he is, what institution he belongs to. What matters is the nature of crime and the spirit of justice which must be the only standard to judge the merit of the case, comments -Aggressors like Halakoo and Changaiz did what history recorded them for. Genocides, macabre death dances, imperialistic arrogance and killing sprees. They hungered for blood and blood they had in full.

Kashmir and other peace processes

Governments of Pakistan and India have initiated a peace process in spite of difficulties and constraints and any effort for a just and honourable peace is always welcome.

Definition of a peace process

There cannot be two opinions that patience is the key to help keep the process on the rails and those who seek peace should be objective, creative and also having courage to acknowledge the realities, understanding the value of placing the people at the heart of the process.

Over 3-years' dialogue sans change in IOK situation

The Pak-India dialogue process, started in January 2004 when President Musharraf and Prime Minister Vajpayee met in Islamabad, has entered into fourth year. Since then, international community and more importantly, Kashmiris have been continuously pinning its hopes that these talks focused mainly on the core issue of Kashmir would help improve the ground situation in occupied Kashmir. But to the dismay of all, the situation remains as it was; Kashmiris are facing the same ordeal as before 2004.

Dialogue, the Path towards Redemption

Discovered by Socrates' pupil Plato, centuries-old dialogic and dialectic method works like an obstetrician's hands in that it works to divulge what may not be possible through simple diagnosis. The findings through it may not be perfect and permanent but putting them to rigorous test and vigorous analysis could make them evolve into solutions, which may be entirely different to the previous but remain applicable to several conditions.
