‘No action against political figures indulging in wrongdoing’

Srinagar, June 15 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the authorities have failed to take action against the political figures booked on charges of beating, intimidating or attempt to murder in various cases.

This happened despite the authorities’ claim that law would take its own course. The victims described the claims as nothing more than a public stunt.

In some cases they said the charges are even tempered and replaced by the milder ones to benefit the culprits since they belong to ruling political parties.

On May 11, National Conference leader, Sheikh Ghulam Ahmad Saloora and his security guards were charged for misbehaving and beating a father-daughter duo. He managed to get out on bail. However, the case has not proceeded further.

“We have been never called by police. They have not even produced charge sheet before the court. They have done nothing in connection with the case,” the victim, Bashir Ahmad Butt said.

“The authorities hardly give heed to cases when political figures are involved. We don’t feel justice will be delivered. Kashmir is a unique place where justice is virtually granted on social networking sites,” he maintained.

A Congress leader, Zahid Jan, was charged with attempt to murder for assaulting a senior advocate of the territory. However, a police source said that the leader managed to get his release from Kothibagh police station where he was lodged.

No action against the political figures has raised many eyebrows. People question that when dealing with stone pelters and protesters, police and authorities have been hyper active. They said when there cases got speedy trial, why not of these politicians. “Here the law becomes active while dealing with the poor and powerless,” a resident of Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad, said.
