UN raises concerns over human rights violations in Manipur, other places in India
New York:The United Nation has expressed grave concerns over the ongoing ethnic riots and human rights violations in violence-hit Manipur state of India, highlighting that such issues are now new to the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the UN report raises serious questions about the escalating violence against religious minorities in Manipur. The global peace body has strongly condemned these violations, emphasizing a troubling pattern of increasing violence against religious minorities across India, especially in Manipur.
The report points out that India has a history of remaining silent on human rights violations, referencing incidents such as the 2002 anit-Muslim Gujarat riots and subsequent extrajudicial killings. The UN committee has raised alarms about the destruction of worship places and private homes of religious minorities, which exacerbates the existing communal tensions.
The United Nations report criticizes the lack of action against government officials who have targeted religious minorities, engaged in hate speech, and incited public violence. Despite acknowledging incidents of rape and other crimes during the Manipur riots, the Indian government has yet to propose any action plan to address these atrocities.
The UN has repeatedly highlighted the severe human rights violations occurring in India. However, the Modi government has remained unresponsive to these concerns.
The international community continues to call for India to take immediate and effective measures to protect the rights of all its citizens and to hold those responsible for these violations accountable.
These developments underscore the urgent need for international attention and intervention to address the ongoing human rights crisis in Manipur and other parts of India.
