Civilian’s death in police custody sparks protest in Reasi

Jammu: A 25-year-old civilian was found dead under suspicious circumstances inside a police station in the Reasi district of Indian illegally Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the civilian, identified as Anmol Dogra, allegedly died by hanging in the Katra police station where he had been detained, Indian officials claimed.

The circumstances surrounding Dogra’s death triggered protests from his family in his native Mathyal village.

Puran Chand, Dogra’s father, has raised serious concerns about the nature of his son’s death, questioning how Dogra could have accessed a rope to hang himself while in custody. He said his son was taken into detention for questioning in connection with a case last week. Chand has called for a magisterial inquiry, demanding transparency and accountability.

Reportedly, Sub-divisional Magistrate Piyush Dotra has ordered an inquiry into the incident in response to the public outcry.

The body of the deceased was returned to his family after a post-mortem examination. In the wake of the release of the body, Dogra’s relatives took to the streets, blocking the main road near Mathyal to protest against his custodial death and to demand justice.
