UNHCR team meets Rohingya refugees in Jammu amid BJP’s hue and cry
Jammu: A two-member team from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) visited the Rohingya settlement in Jammu region of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, senior Protection Officer Tomoko Fukumura and Protection Associate Ragini Trakroo Zutushi met with Rohingya residents and local communities during their visit to the Kiryani Talab area of Narwal in the region.
The visit comes amid a heated debate over providing basic utilities to the Rohingyas. Power and water connections to some slums were cut by the Lieutenant Governor administration, prompting protests.
The BJP has demanded a probe into the settlement of Rohingyas in Jammu, calling it a “political conspiracy.” Authorities have intensified a crackdown, registering FIRs against landlords who rented properties to the refugees.
The UNHCR delegation returned to Delhi without meeting police officials as planned.
