March 2025 report on hate crimes against Muslims in India

New Delhi: Since the BJP-led Indian government assumed power in 2014, there has been a notable increase in hate crimes targeting Muslims in India.

The data will be transformed into a searchable and analytical database, serving as a valuable resource for journalists, academics, and human rights activists. This effort aims to enhance awareness and foster action against the rising tide of hate crimes targeting Muslims in India.

Nature of Incident: Communal Violence Over Tomb Removal Demand

Location: Nagpur, Maharashtra

Brief Description of the Incident:

Tensions erupted in Nagpur, Maharashtra, after a hard-line Hindu group, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (V.H.P.), called for the removal of the tomb of the 17th-century Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. The demand, ignited during protests timed with Chhatrapati Shivaji’s birth anniversary, led to communal violence, a curfew, and numerous arrests. Protesters burned an effigy of Aurangzeb, which was mistakenly associated with Quran desecration rumors, provoking riots and clashes with police. The unrest resulted in multiple injuries and property damage, prompting authorities to deploy additional security forces to maintain order. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attributed the violence partly to the Bollywood film “Chhaava,” which dramatizes the historical conflict between Aurangzeb and Shivaji. While Hindu nationalists besiege historical grievances to fuel modern tensions, historians contest the notion of a purely religious conflict between the two rulers, arguing it represents feudal power struggles.
