Mehbooba Mufti raises alarm over IIOJK Assembly’s silence on Waqf Act
Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has expressed serious concern over the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir Assembly’s failure to pass a resolution on the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mehbooba Mufti convened an emergency meeting of the party’s senior leadership in Srinagar to discuss the implications of the IIOJK Legislative Assembly’s inaction and its potential impact on the administration of Waqf properties in the occupied territory. The meeting was attended by key PDP leaders, including Dr Mehboob Beigh, Asiya Naqash, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, Muhammad Khursheed Aalam and Basharat Bukhari, among others.
In her address, Mehbooba Mufti voiced grave concern over what she termed the IIOJK Assembly’s “worrying silence” on a matter of both religious and administrative importance.
She emphasized, “This is not merely a political issue—it concerns the religious autonomy and integrity of our institutions”. Waqf properties, which include mosques, shrines, and graveyards, hold immense religious and cultural significance for the IIOJK’s Muslim community.
PDP leaders at the meeting stressed the urgent need for the Omar Abdullah-led IIOJK government to break its silence, clarify its position on the Waqf Act, and ensure that these religious assets are safeguarded through transparent and accountable governance.
