Indian troops arrest eight Hurriyet activists in IIOJK

Srinagar: In yet another instance of New Delhi’s relentless crackdown on peaceful political expression in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Indian forces have arrested at least eight Hurriyet activists in Bandipora district for voicing their demand for a plebiscite in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the arrests took place during a series of house raids and search operations carried out across various areas of the district. The activists arrested are affiliated with Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party, and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples League, all pro-freedom political organizations. They were booked under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The detained activists have been identified as Nazir Ahmad Ahangar, Sheikh Danish Mushtaq, Tahir Ahmad Mir, Ghulam Din War, Khursheed Ahmad Lone, Mohammad Shafi Dar, Abdul Majeed Gojri and Abdul Majeed Lone.

During the raids, Indian forces’ personnel also harassed the families of the arrested individuals, seizing bank documents, books and electronic devices, including mobile phones, from their homes.

The latest crackdown is part of broader strategy directed by Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, following his recent visit to the occupied territory. The aim is to silence Kashmiris’ voices advocating the internationally recognized right to self-determination.
