Indian consulate in Melbourne defaced again with graffiti
Melbourne: The Indian consulate in Melbourne has once again been targeted, with fresh graffiti found defacing the main entrance of the diplomatic mission.
According to Kashmir Media Service, unidentified individuals defaced the Consulate General of India in Melbourne, located at 344 St Kilda Road, on Thursday. The incident marks the latest in a string of such acts targeting the consulate.
Victoria Police confirmed the incident, stating, “Officers believe the front entry of the building was graffitied overnight, sometime between Wednesday and Thursday. An investigation into the damage remains ongoing”. No suspects have been identified so far.
The Australia Today reported that similar acts of vandalism have occurred previously, with anti-India slogans and graffiti being used to target the consulate.
The Indian High Commission in a post on X said it raised the issue with Australian authorities. “The incident of defacing at the premises of the Consulate General of India in Melbourne by miscreants has been raised with Australian authorities. All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety and security of Indian diplomatic and consular premises and personnel in the country,” the post said.
An Indian-Australian community member described the act as more than mere graffiti, saying, “It’s not just vandalism — it’s a message of intimidation aimed at our community. These repeated attacks on cultural and diplomatic spaces are deeply distressing.”
