Jammu: Indian army troops brutally assaulted civilians during a search operation in Rajouri district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, sparking condemnation.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred when a vehicle carrying three civilians to a marriage function was stopped at an army checkpoint in the Sunderbani area of Rajouri. Two occupants of the vehicle got down and when they informed the troops that the third was a senior professor teaching in Delhi, the soldiers grew aggressive. They dragged the professor out of the vehicle and beat him mercilessly. The other two persons were also assaulted.

Reacting to the incident, People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti said that Army personnel mercilessly assaulted a professor when he was on his way to attend his sister’s wedding in Nowshera. “Deeply disturbing visuals have emerged from Lam in Nowshera where Army personnel were seen mercilessly assaulting Professor Liyaqat Chowdary. The professor, accompanied by his brothers, was en route to attend his sister’s wedding when the incident occurred,” she tweeted.

She added that such “a shocking act” had broken a common man’s trust, especially because the professor’s family had served in the Indian Army. Urging immediate action from officials, Mufti added, “I urge senior army personnel to take immediate and strict action against those responsible.”

It was only after public outage that the Indian army announced an enquiry into the assault of civilians in Rajouri. An incident has come to light wherein certain individuals were allegedly manhandled by army personnel in Rajouri district, a Defence Ministry statement said, adding that an enquiry has been ordered.

However, in IIOJK, such inquiries are widely seen as mere eyewash. Despite countless incidents where Indian troops have brutally assaulted, and even killed, civilians in cold blood, not a single perpetrator has been held accountable. The Kashmiri people view these so-called investigations as hollow attempts to deflect criticism without delivering justice.
