Indian forces kill eight tribal members in Jharkhand
Ranchi: Indian forces have killed eight members of the tribal community in the Jharkhand state of India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the killings took place during a cordon-and-search operation in the Lugu Hills of the Lalpania region in Bokaro district.
Police officials claimed that eight Naxals were killed in an encounter with CoBRA commandos of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state police on Monday. The bodies were being recovered, and the search operation was still ongoing, officials added. However, local residents stated that those killed were members of the local tribal community.
It is pertinent to mention that over 140 suspected Maoists have been killed in gunfights with Indian security personnel this year. In 2024 alone, 217 suspected Maoists were killed by Indian forces.
The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and several civil society groups have condemned the killings and called for an international investigation. It should be noted that Maoist guerrillas have long been fighting for independence from Indian rule. KMS-14U
