Kuki villages in Manipur burnt to ashes in attack; curfew imposed

Imphal: In violence-hit Manipur, Kuki tribes’ houses were set ablaze by miscreants in two villages of Kamjong and Sahamphung leading to their destruction.

According to Kashmir Media Service, an estimated 28 houses were burned to ashes.

Following this, curfew was imposed by the District Magistrate in two villages. Police officials said no casualties have been reported yet. However, several families were left devastated as the attack took away their homes and livelihood.

According to the officials, the arson attack occurred in Gampal and Haiyang villages which come under the jurisdiction of Sahamphung sub-division. The destroyed villages are located near the Indo-Myanmar border around 50 km away from Kamjong district headquarters.

After the incident, the District Magistrate issued a curfew order. The order reads, “Such disturbance could lead to serious breaches of peace and endangered public tranquility, pose risks for human lives and property.”

Kuki Inpi Manipur and Kuki Students Organisation condemned the attack and demanded immediate justice to the families by rebuilding the two villages along with proper rehabilitation and provision of basic necessities.

In the statement the organisation said, “These heinous attacks have terrorized innocent civilians and once again imperilled the already fragile peace and stability in the region.”

Several other organisations from the Kuki-zo community also condemned the attack and demanded justice and peace urging the authorities to act with integrity and impartiality.
