Muslim MLA among 8 arrested in Assam for calling Pahalgam attack a Modi govt conspiracy
Guwahati: Indian police have arrested at least eight individuals, including a Muslim Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in BJP-ruled state of Assam for stating that the recent Pahalgam attack was a conspiracy orchestrated by the Modi government.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Assam police arrested Aminul Islam, a legislator from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), under the orders of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Aminul Islam had stated that both the 2019 Pulwama attack and the recent Pahalgam incident were orchestrated conspiracies by the Modi-led regime.
Assam is ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and critics say political dissent, particularly from the Muslim community, is increasingly being targeted. In a provocative social media post, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma lashed out against Pakistan, writing: “Assam will not tolerate anyone who supports Pakistan in connection with the Pahalgam incident.”
The arrests have sparked concerns among human rights defenders, who say such actions are a direct attack on freedom of speech and democratic expression.
