WMC urges UN probe into rights violations in occupied Kashmir

Geneva: Altaf Hussain Wani, Representative of the World Muslim Congress (WMC), has urged the Special Rapporteur on International Solidarity to prioritize a thorough investigation into the ongoing human rights violations in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to Kashmir Media Service, Altaf Wani made these remarks while addressing the 59th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council today, under Agenda Item 3, during the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on International Solidarity.

“For decades, the Kashmiri people have endured systemic injustices, repression, and a denial of their fundamental rights,” Wani said. “India’s assertion that the Kashmir issue is an internal matter is demonstrably false. This is fundamentally a matter of the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who have endured decades of occupation.”

Wani emphasized that genuine stability in the occupied territory cannot be achieved through the suppression of fundamental human rights. He urged the international community to move beyond expressions of concern and take concrete action to address the dire situation.

The WMC representative called on the UN Human Rights Council to establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate abuses in IIOJK, ensure accountability for perpetrators, and allow unimpeded access for humanitarian organizations to provide essential healthcare, education, and livelihood support to the Kashmiri people.

He stressed that the Special Rapporteur’s attention to the situation is “not merely desired; it is a moral imperative.”

“The time for complacency is over,” Wani concluded. “The Kashmiri people deserve justice, dignity, and the opportunity to determine their own future. Let us uphold the principles of international solidarity and stand with them in their hour.”
