Hurriyat leader Farooq Ahmad Tawheedi arrested in Sopore

Another pro-freedom activist detained in IIOJK

Srinagar: Indian police have arrested All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader and Muslim League General Secretary Farooq Ahmad Tawheedi in Sopore area of Baramulla district in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Farooq Ahmad Tawheedi was arrested during a raid on his residence in Sopore. He was subsequently shifted to the District Jail Kupwara.

Reportedly, Tawheedi was taken into custody in connection with a fake case registered against him. The Muslim League Jammu Kashmir was banned by the BJP-led Indian government in 2024. The party is headed by incarcerated APHC Chairman Masarrat Aalam Butt, who has been lodged in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail since his last arrest in 2015. His cumulative period of imprisonment exceeds two decades.

Meanwhile, Indian police also arrested another pro-freedom Kashmiri, Mohammad Amin Malik, from Sopore.

Kashmir watchers view the arrests as part of the continuing crackdown by the Indian authorities on pro-freedom leaders, activists, and organizations in the occupied territory. They say dissenting political voices have faced increasing restrictions, arrests, and repression, particularly since IIOJK’s special status was revoked in August 2019.
