Kolkata: A 71-year-old Muslim man, Sheikh Shah Alam, died after being assaulted by BJP supporters in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, with his family demanding immediate arrests.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the attack took place in Kelepara village, Purshura, Hooghly. Family members said around a dozen BJP workers gathered outside Alam’s house, called him out, and beat him with bamboo sticks, bricks and iron rods after accusing him of being a Trinamool Congress supporter. His wife Marjina Begum and other women were also assaulted when they tried to intervene.

Alam, who worked at a hotel in Champadanga and had been mostly homebound after a road accident, collapsed from severe injuries and was declared dead at Arambagh Medical College and Hospital.

Family members denied any active political association. “My father-in-law never did politics. He did not take any advantage from any party.

Yet the BJP goons beat him to death. We want strict punishment for the accused,” relative Reshma Khatun told the media. His son Sheikh Rafiqul Islam said, “We are not associated with any party. Yet why did this happen to us?”

The Trinamool Congress condemned the killing, calling it “BJP Bengal’s politics of hatred and violence” and said “an elderly man beaten to death, women shoved aside, terror unleashed inside a home — this is the grim reality of BJP’s model of governance.”
