Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating conditions faced by Kashmiri political prisoners and Hurriyat leaders lodged in various prisons across India.

According to Kashmir Media Service, DFP Spokesperson Advocate Arshad Iqbal in a statement issued in Srinagar said continued political repression, arbitrary arrests, and transfer of Kashmiri detainees to prisons hundreds of miles from their homeland constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights. He stated that during the current extreme summer heat, prisoners are reportedly being denied adequate living conditions, clean drinking water, proper ventilation and basic necessities.

Lack of timely medical care has further endangered the health of many elderly and seriously ill political prisoners, he added.

Advocate Arshad Iqbal said numerous Kashmiri political prisoners, including senior Hurriyat leaders and young activists, remain incarcerated in distant Indian jails, making family visits extremely difficult and causing immense emotional, psychological and financial hardship. He emphasized that India cannot suppress the Kashmiri people’s internationally recognized right to self-determination through force and imprisonment.

Occupied Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognized disputed territory, and its settlement must be in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the will of the Kashmiri people, he said.

The DFP spokesperson urged the United Nations, ICRC, OIC and international human rights organizations to take immediate notice of the worsening conditions. He called for urgent access to medical treatment, humane detention conditions, regular family visits, and unconditional release of all political prisoners.
