India among 4 countries with most cities at risk of extreme heat

New Delhi : India is among four countries whose largest number of cities is at risk from extreme heat, according to a new analysis published in the journal Sustainable Cities and Society.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the study, which ranked 205 of the world’s largest cities, found that more than 95 per cent of the most at-risk cities are in South and Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

India’s Ahmedabad in Gujarat was ranked as the second most at-risk city globally, after Al Basrah in Iraq. Major Indian tourist and business destinations, including Jaipur, were also listed among the top 50 cities facing the highest danger as the planet continues to warm.

Experts have warned that South Asian cities face growing threats from heatwaves, with vulnerable populations most at risk.
