India sets up military medicine department, fueling fear of possible military misadventurism
New Delhi : India has established its first dedicated Department of Military Medicine at the Army’s Central Command in Lucknow, a move that observers say reflects New Delhi’s increasing focus on military preparedness and has fueled concerns about possible misadventurism in the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the new department, inaugurated by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, will focus on battlefield trauma care, combat psychiatry, military medical logistics, emergency medicine, disaster response and preparedness for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies.
The Indian Ministry of Defence said the department is aimed at strengthening the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces Medical Services and developing indigenous doctrines for future battlefield requirements.
Political and strategic observers said the establishment of the department reflects India’s continued emphasis on enhancing its war-fighting infrastructure and military readiness. They noted that the move comes amid sustained militarization in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and continuing tensions in South Asia, raising concerns that New Delhi is placing greater priority on military preparedness than on pursuing dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution.
They stressed that lasting peace in the region depends on addressing outstanding disputes through diplomacy rather than continued military expansion.
