Hindutva groups assault tribal Christian families in Chhattisgarh, drive them out of houses
Sukma: In India, several tribal Christian families in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district were assaulted and forced to leave their homes by Hindutva groups, while the village panchayat has issued a ban on their return.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the families from Chitalnar village have faced harassment, social boycott and displacement. In March 2026, about 10 Christian families were assaulted by a mob, with Hindutva groups demanding “ghar wapsi”. Two people were hospitalised in the attack.
In July 2026, the Gram Panchayat of Chitalnar wrote to Puspal Police Station stating the families had “left willingly” and declared that people of Christian faith would not be allowed to enter the village. The letter, signed by the Upsarpanch and adopted by the Gram Sabha, was received and stamped by police on 13 July 2026.
Sagar, who is assisting the displaced families, told the media that despite complaints, police took no action. “They were forced to leave. Now they are staying in Sukma town to stay safe,” he said.
Civil society groups have blamed Janjati Suraksha Manch, an RSS-affiliated organisation, for leading the campaign against Christian Adivasis and demanding removal of their Scheduled Tribe status. Chhattisgarh Yuva Manch has warned of protests if police fail to act.
