Mirwaiz recalls 1989 Indian troops’ assault on Jamia Masjid, says scars remain 37 years on
Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today recalled the events of “Operation Jamia Masjid” carried out by Indian forces on August 25, 1989, saying the painful memories and scars of the incident remain even 37 years later.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a post on X, Mirwaiz said on this day in 1989, the sanctity of Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid was violated, worshippers were detained and the grand mosque’s sacred space was desecrated during ‘Operation Jamia Masjid’.
He said the mosque had stood through assaults, sieges, closures and repeated attempts to silence its pulpit.
“Thirty-seven years on, the scars remain. Yet Jamia Masjid continues to stand, as Kashmir’s spiritual heart, a witness to its history, and a voice for the faith, dignity and rights of its people,” he said.
Mirwaiz said the historic Jamia Masjid continues to remain an enduring symbol of faith and resilience, deeply connected with the religious, social and public life of the people of Kashmir.
