IIOJK in focus

CPI-M’s Tarigami questions Delhi’s normalcy claims, seeks restoration of IIOJK rights

Jammu: Senior Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has called for immediate restoration of the political rights of the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing media on the sidelines of a function in Jammu to pay homage to CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury ahead of his second death anniversary on September 12, Tarigami questioned the India’s claims of normalcy in the occupied territory.

He asked the authorities to explain why members of the Kashmiri Pandit community are again receiving threats despite repeated assertions that peace has returned to the terrotory.

Targeting the BJP over recent protests in Jammu and Srinagar, the Kulgam MLA said: “The BJP is also protesting, as is the National Conference for statehood. But I myself could not understand what exactly the BJP is protesting about. They have the Government of India with them, and even the local administration is effectively in their hands. So whom are they going to hold responsible?”

Tarigami criticised the manner in which IIOJK was reorganised and said the legislature has been rendered powerless by the Government of India.

“The rights granted to the people of Jammu and Kashmir by the Constituent Assembly should be restored. That is where our security lies, and that is where our future lies as well. This is a question of the rights of Jammu. It is also a question of the rights of Kashmir. Weakening the people of IIOJK does not serve the interests of anyone” he said.

He also sought answers on who changed land and employment protections that existed during Maharaja Hari Singh’s rule.
