According to Kashmir Media Service, lawyer and Congress spokesperson Aman Wadud on Saturday said that a Muslim lawyer, advocate Ariful Islam, has been remanded to judicial custody until 7 August after being detained by Assam Police for more than 24 hours, despite being a bystander near the site of a NEET protest in Guwahati.
Aman Wadud, who appeared for Ariful Islam in court, said the advocate was in his lawyers’ uniform, showed police his Bar ID card, and was carrying copies of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) when he was detained.
Wadud said Islam was booked under Section 152 of the BNS, which pertains to acts endangering the “sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.”
The advocate said the arrest came even as the Indian government had agreed to withdraw cases against peaceful protesters across the country.
Criticising the police action, Wadud said that the police had “crossed all limits of arbitrariness” and violated constitutional protections. He said Ariful Islam has now been remanded to judicial custody until 7 August.
