Horrific crime in Delhi: Teenage girl gang-raped, stabbed to death
Brutal crime highlights grave risks faced by women in India
New Delhi: In a horrific incident, a 17-year-old girl was gang-raped and stabbed to death before her body was dumped in an open field by four people, including three minors, in BJP-ruled Delhi.
The girl’s body was found near Jaipal Rana’s field on Kushak Road, police said. It had decomposed to such an extent that her gender could not be immediately ascertained.
Some parts of the body had also been eaten by stray dogs, while one of her hands was found severed from the body, police added.
Police said the girl was raped and stabbed inside a tempo. Two knives used in the crime, clothes worn by the accused and the tempo were recovered.
The adult accused has been identified as Shivam alias Sudama alias Chuchu, a resident of Khadda Colony, while the three juveniles are aged 16 and 17, police said.
Rape and sexual violence has become a common feature of life in India, with official crime data and rights groups continuing to document large numbers of cases. The scale of the problem may be greater than reported, as many survivors face social stigma, fear of bringing shame to their families and other barriers that discourage them from reporting sexual violence. Delhi has repeatedly recorded a high number of crimes against women, including rape cases. It has become the rape capital of the world.
