New Delhi: Trinamool Congress leader and Indian parliament member Derek O\u2019Brien has criticized the Narendra Modi government for its treatment of Christians and minorities, calling for urgent accountability and action.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a strongly worded blog post, O\u2019Brien highlighted the targeting of Christian institutions, rising violence against minorities, and the Modi government\u2019s neglect of Manipur. His remarks come just days after Prime Minister Modi attended a Christmas event organized by the Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference of India (CBCI) in Delhi\u2014an appearance O\u2019Brien dismissed as a hollow gesture failing to address the community’s pressing concerns.<\/p>\n
The TMC leader said that the Modi government was weaponizing the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) to suppress Christian-run institutions and questioned its silence on hate speeches and communal slurs. He further criticized divisive policies, including the Waqf Bill and actions targeting minorities in Kerala.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy are attacks on Christian institutions increasing? Why does the government remain silent on hate crimes and communal rhetoric?\u201d O\u2019Brien questioned, calling for urgent answers.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the plight of Manipur, O\u2019Brien said that the Modi government was failing to address the state’s suffering, describing its actions as indifferent and harmful.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany Christmases have passed; it\u2019s time to demand accountability from the Prime Minister,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on his two decades in public life, O\u2019Brien wrote, \u201cIn all my years in Parliament, I have never written about the church in India\u2014until now. To remain silent any longer would be complicity.\u201d<\/p>\n
