Bengaluru: Two sitting judges of the Karnataka High Court, Justice V Srishananda and Justice Krishna S Dixit, have sparked fresh controversy after attending a Brahman convention in Bengaluru, where they praised the contributions of the Brahmin community.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the two HC judges\u2019 participation at the event, organized by the Hindutva-aligned Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha, has raised questions about the increasing communal bias among judiciary members under the current Modi-led government.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the event, Justice Krishna S Dixit emphasized the pride associated with the Brahmin community, crediting it for the development of prominent philosophical doctrines. He also highlighted the Brahmin community\u2019s role in framing the Indian Constitution, noting their intellectual contributions to the Drafting Committee. He further stated that the term “Brahmin” should refer to varna (a social classification) rather than caste, which has long been a contentious issue in India\u2019s social and political fabric.<\/p>\n
Justice Srishananda, echoing similar sentiments, argued that such events were necessary to discuss community issues. He addressed criticism about the event’s timing, pointing out that the purpose was to unite the community rather than divert attention from the struggles faced by marginalized groups.<\/p>\n
However, these remarks have raised serious concerns, particularly as both judges have previously courted controversy for anti-Muslim statements. Justice Dixit has been criticized for his ruling in a case involving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership, where he issued a stay order on an investigation into an \u201cobjectionable\u201d campaign video that demonized Muslims, sparking accusations of pandering to the BJP’s divisive politics.<\/p>\n
Justice Srishananda has also been at the center of a storm following his remarks about a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru, which he referred to as \u201cPakistan.\u201d The comment, made during a discussion about traffic discipline, was widely condemned as inflammatory and divisive.<\/p>\n
The participation of both judges in a Brahman-centric event further compounds concerns about judicial impartiality.
