Islamabad: In connection with International Women\u2019s Day, a webinar was organized to highlight the struggles and resilience of Kashmiri women in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n
According to Kashfmir Media Service, at the event organized by Friends of Kashmir International,experts and activists from diverse fields called for renewed advocacy and legal measures to address their plight.<\/p>\n
Chairperson Ghazala Habib emphasized that Friends of Kashmir is a non-political platform dedicated to raising awareness on the Kashmir issue. She recalled the historical efforts for women’s rights and urged global solidarity for Kashmiri women suffering due to enforced disappearances, systemic violence, and restrictions on their dignity.<\/p>\n
APHC leader Shamim Shawl stressed the importance of legal mechanisms to seek justice, recalling the Kunan Poshpora mass rape case as a symbol of Indian forces’ brutality. She called for sustained international advocacy to amplify Kashmiri women’s voices.<\/p>\n
Dr. Shazia Anwar Cheema criticized Western bias in defining human rights violations and called for reframing the Kashmiri narrative to counter selective global discourse. Analyst Gul-e-Ayesha Bhatti rejected the victim label, highlighting the activism of Kashmiri women like Parveena Ahangar and Asia Andrabi.<\/p>\n
Former AJK MLA Sehrish Qamar called for youth engagement in activism, quoting Jinnah\u2019s vision for women’s empowerment. Dr. Sundas Mustaqeem noted the severe underrepresentation of Kashmiri women in governance, while youth leader Nazneen Gillani emphasized educating young generations on Kashmir\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
PhD scholar Naila Altaf Kiani highlighted the struggles of over 2,300 “half-widows” and the hardships women faced during the 2019 lockdown. Justice (Retd.) Uzma Akhtar urged legal interventions to secure justice for Kashmiri women. Friends of Kashmir Vice Chairman Abdul Hameed Lone questioned whether Kashmiri women truly have access to basic rights, while Tayyaba Khurshid addressed their psychological trauma, calling for intensified activism in Pakistan and AJK.<\/p>\n
