According to Kashmir Media Service, the fair, held annually after Holi, has long been a site of Hindu-Muslim syncretism, with Ghazi Mian\u2019s mausoleum drawing devotees from both communities. However, the BJP and its affiliates have consistently portrayed him as an “invader” and “plunderer” to stoke communal narratives.<\/p>\n
Denying permission this year, a senior police officer dismissed the fair as “anti-national” and insisted it would not be allowed despite its deep-rooted tradition. Sambhal ASP Shrish Chandra linked Ghazi Mian to Mahmud of Ghazni, using this historical association to justify the ban.<\/p>\n
Authorities have threatened strict action against any attempt to hold the event, aligning with the RSS-backed narrative that vilifies Ghazi Mian.<\/p>\n
Ironically, the official website of Bahraich district, where Ghazi\u2019s mausoleum stands, promotes the site as a major cultural and tourist attraction. The same portal describes Ghazi Mian as a \u201cfamous 11th-century Islamic saint and soldier\u201d and acknowledges the annual fair in his honor.<\/p>\n
Neja Committee president Shahid Hussain Masoodi condemned the move, questioning why an event held for generations was now being banned.
