New Delhi:\u00a0 Normal life was severely disrupted across India as millions of workers protested against the anti-labour policies of the BJP-led Modi government. The strike affected transportation, banking, educational institutions, private offices, mining, construction, and postal services.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the call for the strike was given by ten major trade unions of India, including AITUC, HMS, CITU, INTUC, TUCC, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC. The Wednesday strike witnessed the participation of over 250 million workers from various sectors in the country.<\/p>\n
The protest aimed to highlight critical issues such as threats to labour rights, changes to labour laws, growing contractual employment, privatization of public sector institutions, and the alarming rise in unemployment. The unions pointed out that the government has failed to convene the annual labour conference for the past ten years and has consistently ignored a 17-point charter of demands submitted by workers\u2019 organizations. These demands include guarantees of minimum wages, permanent employment, and a halt to privatization.<\/p>\n
The strike also received strong support from farmers’ organizations, agricultural labour unions, and several social groups. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha, a major farmers\u2019 coalition, played a leading role in backing the protest, intensifying both its scale and impact.<\/p>\n
According to Amarjeet Kaur of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), more than 250 million workers participated in the strike nationwide.
