New Delhi: Several Indian opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, staged a symbolic protest in the Parliament House complex today against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, which they said is aimed at disenfranchising marginalized communities.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, lawmakers from the INDIA bloc\u2014including Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, TMC, RJD, and Left parties\u2014marched inside the Parliament complex before the day\u2019s proceedings began. At the protest site, a bin was placed, and one by one, MPs tore posters with \u201cSIR\u201d written on them and dropped them into the bin as a symbolic rejection of the exercise.<\/p>\n
The MPs raised slogans such as “Save Democracy” and “Stop Vote-Bandi”, demanding a rollback of the SIR process and a formal discussion in both houses of Parliament.<\/p>\n
Congress chief Kharge said that the Modi government wants to remove the votes of the poor, Dalits, tribals, backward classes, minorities and the deprived, so that it can change the Constitution of India. “The RSS-BJP has always wanted to deprive the weaker sections of the society of the right to vote, and now by using SIR, it is hell-bent on fulfilling its years-old intention,” he said in a post on X.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is very unfortunate that a constitutional institution like the Election Commission is supporting the BJP-RSS in this conspiracy of ‘vote bandi’, he added said.<\/p>\n
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, who also joined the protest, posted pictures on X and said, “There is talk of implementing SIR across the country. Our Constitution makers have given the right to vote to every Indian. Taking away the right to vote from the poor people is like destroying democracy. This is not acceptable.”<\/p>\n
Opposition parties have continued their protests in both houses of Parliament, insisting that the Election Commission\u2019s SIR process is politically motivated and aimed at suppressing voter turnout in Bihar ahead of assembly elections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
