However, it became a political and religious flashpoint as the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) launched an aggressive campaign from the 1980s to replace it with a Ram temple they claimed was the birthplace of Hindu god Rama.

This campaign climaxed on December 6, 1992, when a massive mob incited by speeches from BJP leaders like L.K. Advani and Uma Bharti, overwhelmed police protection and tore the mosque down in a few hours using axes and hammers.

This act of destruction was not spontaneous but a premeditated sabotage planned months in advance by top leaders of the RSS, VHP, and BJP, according to former intelligence officials and sting operations. The demolition triggered nationwide communal riots killing at least 2,000 people, mostly Muslims, and left a legacy of impunity. The judiciary largely failed to hold the orchestrators accountable, with most high-profile accused being acquitted or given light sentences. The Liberhan Commission report years later bluntly implicated BJP and RSS leaders for orchestrating the demolition yet no decisive justice followed.

This stain on India’s secular fabric has been worsened by the ongoing trend of desecrating and converting Muslim places of worship into Hindu temples. The Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi, for instance, faces continuous Hindu claims and court suits aiming to rededicate it as a temple. In Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain and the towns of Panipat and Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, historic mosques have been targets of vandalism and sustained “reclamation” efforts by Hindu extremist groups.

The recent violent clash in August 2025 in Fatehpur’s Abu Nagar area perfectly reflects this modus operandi. Here, a 200-year-old Muslim tomb became the flashpoint of communal violence after Hindu activists led by local BJP leaders forcefully asserted claims that the tomb was built over a Shiva temple.

International human rights bodies have condemned India for frequent violations of Muslim minorities’ rights. Reports detail the systematic destruction of mosques, rise in hate crimes, forced demographic changes, and impunity for Hindu terrorists. However, both the executive and judiciary persist in ignoring these violations or, worse, tacitly allowing them through selective enforcement and legal loopholes.

The Sambhal Masjid row, the Fatehpur tomb conflict, and the historical destruction of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, chart a grim narrative of a democracy where justice is subverted, law enforcement is compromised, and religious minorities face existential threats.

This is a state-enabled, ideologically driven campaign to erase Muslim heritage from India’s pluralistic ethos, making life perilous and uncertain for millions of Muslims. The judiciary’s failure, the biased police conduct, and the government’s silence or endorsement of these acts reveal an alarming assault on India’s secular democracy and human rights commitments.

Islamabad: The tragic saga of communal violence against Muslims in India, epitomized by incidents like the Sambhal Masjid row and the recent Fatehpur tomb clashes, exposes the rot in India’s judicial and law enforcement systems.
