Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has strongly criticized the detention of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik under the draconian Public Safety Act (PSA), terming it an attack on democratic values and institutions. She urged the Speaker to convene an emergency session of the Assembly to debate the issue and pass a resolution demanding Malik\u2019s release.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, speaking to media persons in Srinagar today, Mehbooba Muft said, \u201cInvoking PSA against an elected representative is unacceptable. The Speaker should have called an emergency session, debated the matter, and sent a resolution to Delhi. That is how democracy functions\u201d.<\/p>\n
Calling for immediate corrective measures, Mehbooba urged the Speaker to rise above politics and call an Assembly session without delay. \u201cSuch misuse of PSA against elected representatives must not become a precedent,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Mehbooba also highlighted the plight of thousands of Kashmiris jailed in Tihar, Agra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, adding their families struggle even to visit them. She criticised CM Omar Abdullah\u2019s remarks on providing legal aid to Malik, saying: \u201cLegal help should go to thousands of poor prisoners whose families lack resources, not to an MLA who has the means to defend himself.\u201d<\/p>\n
On AAP MP Sanjay Singh\u2019s recent house arrest in Srinagar, Mehbooba remarked that those who supported the abrogation of Article 370 are now facing its consequences. \u201cHe voted for its removal in 2019, claiming it was good for J&K.
