{"id":184371,"date":"2025-09-26T18:49:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T13:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/?p=184371"},"modified":"2025-09-26T18:49:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T13:49:20","slug":"wangchuk-being-treated-like-a-criminal-wife-gitanjali-angmo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/2025\/09\/26\/wangchuk-being-treated-like-a-criminal-wife-gitanjali-angmo.html","title":{"rendered":"Wangchuk being treated like a \u2018criminal\u2019: Wife Gitanjali Angmo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-184372\" src=\"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2025\/09\/Wife-Gitanjali-Angmo-318x220.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2025\/09\/Wife-Gitanjali-Angmo-318x220.jpeg 318w, https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2025\/09\/Wife-Gitanjali-Angmo.jpeg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Leh: Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of renowned Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has strongly condemned her husband\u2019s arrest, saying that authorities are treating him like a criminal without any reason and deliberately targeting him to tarnish his image.<\/p>\n<p>According to Kashmir Media Service, Wangcuk was arrested from his village Ulyaktopo in Leh today and taken to a local police station for questioning.<\/p>\n<p>Angmo, co-founder of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL), denounced the arrest as \u201cthe worst form of democracy,\u201d stating that the police not only took Wangchuk into custody without due process, but also raided their home and spread \u201cfalse narratives\u201d to paint him as \u201canti-national\u201d. \u201cIt is the worst form of democracy\u2026 without any trial, without any reason, they have just taken him like a criminal,\u201d Angmo said in a press statement outside the Leh police station, where her husband is being held for questioning.<\/p>\n<p>Wangchuk has been peacefully protesting for over five years in defense of Ladakh\u2019s fragile environment and its unique cultural identity. His recent campaigns have focused on seeking constitutional safeguards for Ladakh under Sixth Schedule provisions, which have reportedly drawn increasing scrutiny from authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Angmo further said that the ruling BJP establishment is misusing state machinery and legal instruments such as the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) to stifle dissent and vilify voices that speak up against environmental and political injustices. \u201cThe government should not stoop to this level to tarnish somebody\u2019s image who has been peacefully protesting\u2026,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In a bold challenge, Angmo called for a live, prime-time television debate with Indian government representatives on the allegations being made against her husband, daring anyone from New Delhi to present evidence rather than rely on what she called \u201cstate-sponsored defamation.\u201d \u201cI challenge them to come on prime-time TV to have a one-on-one debate with me about all the allegations,\u201d she said. \u201cLet them not spread false narratives as they are doing.
