Its leaders like K.B. Hedgewar actively participated in the independence movement and went to jail. The Sangh\u2019s motto has always been \u2018Nation First\u2019,\u201d Modi said, adding that the organisation had made \u201ccountless sacrifices\u201d even while facing conspiracies and bans after independence.<\/p>\n<p>However, opposition parties hit back sharply.<\/p>\n<p>The Congress said the RSS had never gone to jail during the independence struggle, charging that \u201cat the height of the Quit India Movement of 1942, when the whole country was filling prisons, the RSS was helping the British suppress the movement.\u201d It added that the organisation had \u201cdivided Hindus and Muslims, helped split the country, and carried the bloodstains of Gandhi\u2019s assassination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Communist Party of India-Marxist described the commemorative items as an \u201cinsult to the Constitution,\u201d arguing that featuring \u201cBharat Mata\u201d on official coinage \u201cpromotes the RSS\u2019s sectarian idea of a Hindu Rashtra.\u201d It said Modi was trying to \u201cwhitewash the shameful role of the RSS, which actually strengthened the colonial policy of divide and rule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh also pointed to historical evidence of the Sangh\u2019s collaboration with the British. \u201cDuring World War II, RSS leaders encouraged Indians to join the colonial army.
