Leh: Ladakh-based renowned climate activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk, currently lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail under the draconian National Security Act (NSA), has said he is ready to remain behind bars until an independent judicial inquiry is conducted into the killing of four civilians during recent protests in Leh.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, in his first message since arrest, conveyed through his lawyer Mustafa Haji and elder brother Ka Tsetan Dorjey Ley, Wangchuk extended condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the September 24 firing incident. He reiterated his unwavering commitment to Ladakh\u2019s peaceful struggle for constitutional safeguards.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stand firmly with the Apex Body, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), and the people of Ladakh in our genuine constitutional demand for Sixth Schedule and Statehood. Whatever actions the Apex Body takes in the interest of Ladakh, I am with them wholeheartedly,\u201d Wangchuk said.<\/p>\n

He urged the people to maintain unity, stressing that the ongoing movement must continue \u201cin the true Gandhian way of non-violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wangchuk\u2019s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has filed a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court, challenging his \u201cillegal and arbitrary detention.\u201d The Modi-led Indian government has sought to link the September 24 violence\u2014sparked during Wangchuk\u2019s hunger strike\u2014to him, a charge his supporters call baseless and politically motivated.<\/p>\n
