New Delhi: Independent Indian journalists and analysts have warned that the Modi-led BJP-RSS regime is extending its political control over India\u2019s premier academic institutions, undermining their autonomy and academic freedom.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the development follows the resignation of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Raipur Director Ram Kumar Kakani, the third IIM head to quit within five years due to conflicts with boards allegedly influenced by the ruling BJP. Kakani resigned in July, citing \u201cconstriction of professional space\u201d and erosion of institutional autonomy under the current dispensation.<\/p>\n
His resignation came after disciplinary action he had taken against a faculty member was struck down by the Chhattisgarh High Court, which ruled that the IIM Board\u2014rather than the Director\u2014was the competent authority under the IIM Act 2017.<\/p>\n
Observers noted that Kakani\u2019s exit mirrors earlier resignations by two former IIM Calcutta heads, Anju Seth (2021) and Uttam Kumar Sarkar (2023), who had also quit over interference from politically aligned boards.<\/p>\n
Prominent journalist Abhisar Sharma remarked that the case exposes how the BJP and RSS are systematically tightening their control over universities such as JNU, BHU, IITs and IIMs, eroding their independent character. He said that while the government seeks to monopolize thought and suppress dissenting voices, the \u201cGodi media\u201d continues to project false narratives of academic progress and institutional excellence.<\/p>\n
