Srinagar: The Environmental Policy Group (EPG) has raised serious concerns over political interference and unscientific planning by the authorities threatening ecology in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, EPG Convenor Faiz Ahmad Bakshi said key ecological zones, including Hokersar and Shalbugh wetlands, are being threatened by encroachers shielded under political influence, while desilting and restoration work has been arbitrarily stopped. He warned that such interference increases flood risks and endangers fragile ecosystems.<\/p>\n
Bakshi also criticised urban development projects, including a proposed flyover at Polo Ground in Srinagar, which would destroy central green spaces and fell nearly 90 chinar trees. He highlighted ongoing construction near Nigeen Lake, which violates environmental norms and High Court guidelines, calling for an immediate halt and a full Environmental Impact Assessment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government cannot promote development at the cost of ecology,\u201d Bakshi said, urging strict enforcement of environmental laws and Indian Supreme Court directives for wetland demarcation and protection. He called for a transparent, science-based approach to development that safeguards Kashmir\u2019s ecological heritage.<\/p>\n
