Jammu: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary has demanded that the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) clarify who authorized the demolition of journalist Arfaz Ahmed\u2019s residence in Jammu.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the JDA, backed by a heavy police contingent, recently demolished Arfaz Ahmed\u2019s home in Narwal area without prior notice. The action triggered widespread outrage from political leaders, lawyers and human rights activists, who termed it a direct assault on press freedom in IIOJK.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters after visiting the journalist\u2019s home, Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary said he was conveying the stand of Omar Abdullah, stressing that the CM has never supported actions motivated by personal vendetta. He said that the Omar Abdullah-led administration works strictly within the framework of the Constitution of India and respects the work of journalists and values the role of the press.<\/p>\n
Choudhary stated that Omar Abdullah had already made it clear that the government had not sanctioned the demolition. \u201cJDA must explain on whose orders this step was taken,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
They deputy CM asserted that Arfaz Ahmad had every right to express his opinions and publish his work. He said any attempt to silence journalists weakens democratic institutions, warning that suppressing people through force will not be tolerated and will have consequences.<\/p>\n
He added that the demolition caused immense distress to the affected family, stressing that those responsible often fail to understand the human impact of such actions.<\/p>\n
The IIOJK government will take strict action against anyone found responsible for issuing unlawful directions, and a thorough inquiry has been assured, he said.<\/p>\n
A day earlier, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had condemned the demolition of Arfaz Ahmed\u2019s home, saying that New Delhi-imposed administration under Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha carried out such drives without the knowledge or approval of the elected government.
