Srinagar: Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat, has called for the induction of Village Defence Guards (VDGs)\u2014notorious for killing civilians\u2014into the regular police force for showing \u201cexceptional contribution,\u201d a phrase experts refer to the same killing spree the gang has carried out in the territory in the past.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, critics warn that such moves effectively legitimise paramilitary-style forces historically accused of killing innocent Kashmiris, especially pro-freedom leaders and activists.<\/p>\n

Addressing over 110 VDG members near the International Border in R S Pura, the DGP said the volunteer force has historically contributed to assisting police in intelligence gathering. He urged VDGs to remain vigilant and cooperate actively with forces.<\/p>\n

Prabhat also acknowledged their participation in the past operations, promising rewards for \u201cdemonstrable conspicuous gallantry.\u201d<\/p>\n

While officially framed as voluntary and patriotic service, observers note that integrating VDGs into policing structures risks creating a parallel force capable of being deployed in anti-Kashmiri actions, raising serious human rights concerns. Critics say the Modi-led regime continues to rely on such militias to enforce occupation policies under the guise of counter-terrorism.<\/p>\n
