Dehradun: Muslims in Dehradun were publicly threatened and prevented from offering Friday prayers in the Miyawala area on December 12, while law enforcement personnel stood by without intervening, raising serious concerns about the safety and rights of minorities in India.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, videos circulating on social media show members of extremist Hindu groups confronting Muslim worshippers, shouting abuse, issuing threats, and attempting to block prayers outside homes. In the footage, a member of the group is heard saying, \u201cWe will not allow namaz anywhere in Uttarakhand,\u201d while another warns, \u201cNow even to pray at home, you will need permission.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eyewitnesses said the demonstrators acted with confidence, knowing that authorities would not take action against them.<\/p>\n
Local residents described feeling helpless as the groups openly harassed worshippers. \u201cWe were only praying peacefully. They abused us and threatened us, and the police just stood there,\u201d said one witness. A Muslim shopkeeper noted, \u201cWhen people threaten us openly and the police remain silent, it sends a very dangerous message.\u201d<\/p>\n
Civil rights activists condemned the incident, describing the obstruction of prayers and public threats as a clear violation of fundamental rights. They warned that such actions could embolden further attacks on the freedoms of minorities in the state.<\/p>\n
Community members said similar incidents are becoming increasingly common, reflecting a climate of impunity for extremist groups and growing fear among Muslims about practising their faith freely. Residents emphasized that such intimidation sends a message that even basic rights can be curtailed with the tacit approval of the authorities.<\/p>\n
