Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has said that Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir is going through an extremely difficult phase, particularly since August 2019, with shrinking space for dissent and free expression.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, speaking at a party function in Srinagar, Mehbooba Mufti said, \u201cIt has become difficult even to talk. There is fear in the hearts of people and a sense that their voices are not being heard.\u201d She added that the PDP would continue to raise issues concerning the rights, dignity, and self-respect of the people of IIOJK.<\/p>\n
Reacting to the recent controversy involving Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Mehbooba Mufti described the incident deeply disturbing. She also launched a sharp attack on BJP leaders, stating that their mindset promotes intolerance and the humiliation of women. She said disrespect toward women cannot be justified under any pretext, whether religious or political.<\/p>\n
Mufti further remarked she had no expectations from leaders who repeatedly make statements or engage in actions targeting women and minorities. However, she noted the Bihar incident was particularly disappointing given Kumar\u2019s political standing and experience. She emphasized that India, as a secular country founded on constitutional values, must respect the dignity and rights of all citizens, irrespective of their faith.<\/p>\n
The incident involving Bihar chief minister occurred on Monday in Patna, when Nitish Kumar, while handing over an appointment letter to a Muslim doctor, questioned her attire and proceeded to pull down her niqab.
