Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the New Delhi-imposed administration under the Lieutenant Governor has put significant pressure on senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to make changes to his X account profile.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a message on X, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq revealed that he was being pressured by the authorities to modify his social media profile.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor some time now, I was being pressed by the authorities to make changes to my X handle \u2026… Failing which, they threatened to take down my handle,\u201d said Mirwaiz.<\/p>\n
The former Chairman of Hurriyat Conference said that, under pressure, he had removed the title “Chairman Hurriyat Conference” from his X profile. Mirwaiz’s X handle now only contains his name and basic location details. He has more than 200,000 followers.<\/p>\n
Mirwaiz said the X platform remains among the very few means available to him to reach out to his people. \u201cAt a time when public space and avenues of communication stand severely restricted, this platform remains among the very few means available to me to reach out to my people and share my views on our issues with them and with the outside world. Under such circumstances, it was a Hobson\u2019s choice I was left to make,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
It is worth noting that in August 2019, the Modi government revoked the special status of occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Since then, the IIOJK administration has imposed ban on several key factions of the Hurriyat Conference, including the Awami Action Committee led by Mirwaiz.
