Jabalpur: In Madhya Pradesh, India, a 22-year-old woman was raped on the campus of a state-run university in Jabalpur under the pretext of offering her a job, police said.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural University, where police arrested an upper division clerk (UDC), Durga Shankar Singerha, 58, and a peon, Mukesh Sen, in connection with the assault.<\/p>\n
Additional SP Jitendra Kumar told the media that the victim, a resident of Tilwara area, had seen social media posts about contractual vacancies at the university. Singerha, working at the VC office, assured her that he could secure the job and asked her to maintain contact.<\/p>\n
Police said Singerha repeatedly met the woman in the city and later summoned her to the university campus, claiming an interview would be arranged soon. On the day of the crime, the accused directed the victim to Sen\u2019s residence on the campus. While Sen reportedly left the room and bolted the door from outside, Singerha allegedly raped her.<\/p>\n
After the assault, the accused reportedly dropped the victim outside the campus and threatened her with defamation if she disclosed the incident, police added.<\/p>\n
Rights activists and observers say such crimes highlight the unsafe environment for women across India, where incidents of sexual violence, harassment, and abuse continue to occur frequently. They recalled the brutal gang rape and murder of a young doctor in India a few months ago, which sparked nationwide protests and condemnation.
