Srinagar: Senior advocate Kapil Sibal has informed the Supreme Court of India that Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk does not even appear in the videos relied upon by authorities to justify his preventive detention.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, appearing before a bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and P.B. Varale during the hearing of a habeas corpus petition filed by Wangchuk\u2019s wife, Sibal said that crucial material forming the basis of the detention order under the National Security Act was never supplied to Wangchuk, denying him the constitutional right to make an effective representation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe four videos dated September 24, 2025, which the authorities cited in the detention order, were never provided to Mr. Wangchuk,\u201d Sibal told the Court. \u201cMoreover, he does not even appear in these videos.\u201d The senior advocate further highlighted a lack of application of mind by the detaining authority, noting that the grounds of detention were largely a verbatim reproduction of a recommendation that itself was never furnished to the detenue.<\/p>\n
Wangchuk, who was detained on September 26 last year following protests in Ladakh demanding statehood, remains lodged in a Jodhpur jail.<\/p>\n
The Court fixed the matter for further hearing on January 13. Wangchuk\u2019s detention under the National Security Act has been widely criticized as arbitrary and politically motivated, raising serious questions about due process and civil rights in the region.<\/p>\n
The activist\u2019s wife and relatives expressed deep concern and anxiety over the ongoing detention, stating that denial of the basic right to access the evidence used against him reflects a growing pattern of repression against dissenting voices in occupied Jammu and Kashmir including Ladakh.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
