Srinagar: Gujjar and Bakerwal representative bodies in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir have expressed serious concern over continued harassment of nomadic Bakerwal families in the Mehari Gujjran area of Rajouri district, warning that they will be compelled to launch an agitation if the issue is not addressed immediately.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Jammu and Kashmir Gujjar Bakerwal Youth Welfare Conference and the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Rights Coalition said that the families have been targeted by Forest Department officials for the past two years under the pretext of \u201cforest land protection.\u201d They said the actions run contrary to the Forest Rights Act-2006, which recognizes and safeguards the traditional rights of forest-dwelling communities.<\/p>\n
The organizations maintained that the harassment is also a violation of Article 21, which guarantees the right to life and livelihood. They said officials found violating these protections should face action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.<\/p>\n
They expressed deep concern that the nomadic families continue to face eviction pressures despite holding valid documents, including ration cards, voter identity cards and Aadhaar, all registered at the same location. The groups also pointed out that such actions contradict international commitments including Sustainable Development Goal-10, which emphasizes reducing inequality.<\/p>\n
Local Sarpanch Shazia Tabasum Choudhary, they said, has repeatedly raised the matter over the last two years with various authorities but the affected families have not received any relief.
