Islamabad: Even after the passage of 36 years, justice continues to elude the victims of the Gaw Kadal Srinagar massacre in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, more than 50 Kashmiris were killed in the Gaw Kadal area of Srinagar on this day in 1990 when Indian troops resorted to indiscriminate firing on peaceful demonstrators. The protesters were demanding accountability for the molestation of several women by Indian troops the previous night.<\/p>\n
Since 1989, Indian forces have committed scores of brutal massacres across IIOJK, and the memories of bloodbaths like Gaw Kadal remain deeply etched in the collective consciousness of the Kashmiri people.<\/p>\n
The report pointed out that such massacres were aimed at instilling fear among the population. It added that the large-scale killings and other brutal acts by the Indian government were also intended to alter the demographic composition of the disputed territory by converting its Muslim-majority status into a minority.<\/p>\n
The report said that the Gaw Kadal and other massacres stand as stark reminders of what it termed the criminal face of India\u2019s so-called democracy and the occupation forces deployed in IIOJK.<\/p>\n
However, it stressed that these wanton killings have failed to deter Kashmiris from pursuing their struggle for the right to self-determination through a UN-mandated plebiscite. It said the people of Kashmir will not rest until they achieve freedom from Indian rule.<\/p>\n
The report urged global human rights bodies to conduct independent probes into all massacres committed by Indian troops in the occupied territory since 1989. It called upon the international community to play its role in bringing the perpetrators of the Gaw Kadal Srinagar and other massacres in IIOJK to justice.
