Srinagar,: An intense and short-lived snowstorm swept across Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, severely affecting normal life across several districts.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, an independent weather forecaster said areas close to the Pir Panjal range bore the brunt of the storm. In Shopian district, the plains recorded snowfall ranging from 1.5 to 3 feet, while higher reaches witnessed accumulations of up to five feet, an unusually high volume for such a short duration.<\/p>\n
The impact of the snowstorm extended to parts of Budgam, Pulwama, Kulgam, Kupwara and Baramulla districts. In higher elevations across these districts, snow accumulation ranged between two and five feet, all within the same narrow time window.<\/p>\n
Weather observers described the event as one of the most aggressive winter spells of the season, noting that such intense snowfall over a brief period significantly increased the risk of disruption to transport, power supply and essential services.<\/p>\n
In a rare development, the snowline dropped below 1,000 metres in Karnah Valley of Kupwara district. The Seemari\u2013Teetwal belt recorded over two inches of snowfall, an uncommon occurrence in an area that typically remains snow-free even during peak winter months. Officials said even a one-inch snowfall is considered rare in this belt, making the event the first of its kind since 2005.<\/p>\n
Across the Line of Control, the connected region of Muzaffarabad, located at an elevation of around 740 metres, also recorded snowfall after nearly a decade, indicating the unusually wide spread of the cold system.<\/p>\n
