Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, villagers from several areas of south Kashmir have voiced strong opposition to the proposed Bijbehara\u2013Pahalgam railway line, expressing serious concern over the potential loss of agricultural land, orchards and livelihoods that have sustained their families for generations.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, residents of Joibal-Veeri, Dirhama and Wularhama said railway authorities have conducted surveys in their villages, triggering widespread anxiety. Locals fear that the proposed rail alignment and possible halt points at Dirhama and Wularhama would cause extensive damage to paddy fields and orchards, which form the backbone of the local economy.<\/p>\n

During a gathering at Wularhama village, National Conference Member of Parliament Mian Altaf backed the villagers\u2019 opposition and termed the project unjustified. He said there was no practical rationale for extending a railway line to Pahalgam, arguing that it served no clear purpose for tourism.<\/p>\n

The MP was accompanied by local MLA Altaf Kaloo. Altaf urged residents to remain vigilant while expressing hope that the project would not proceed in its current form.<\/p>\n

Earlier, MLA Bijbehara Bashir Ahmad Veeri and a senior leader of the Peoples Democratic Party had also visited the affected villages and assured locals of their support.
