Washington: The United States has sharply criticized the free trade agreement between India and the European Union, accusing European countries of indirectly financing the Russia-Ukraine war through energy-linked trade with India.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said European nations continue to purchase refined oil products from India that originate from Russian crude, despite publicly supporting sanctions against Moscow. He made the remarks while defending the Trump administration\u2019s decision to impose steep tariffs on Indian imports over New Delhi\u2019s energy ties with Russia.<\/p>\n
Speaking to ABC News, Bessent said the United States has imposed 25 per cent tariffs on India for buying Russian oil, while Europe has simultaneously moved ahead with a major trade deal with New Delhi. He said Russian oil is refined in India and then exported to Europe, effectively allowing European countries to benefit from Russian energy while claiming a tough stance on the war.<\/p>\n
Bessent said Washington has borne a greater economic and political burden by imposing sanctions and pushing to decouple from Russian energy, while European governments continue to exploit loopholes in the global oil supply chain. He added that the US is also working toward a negotiated end to the conflict in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
The comments come amid renewed trans-Atlantic friction over trade and energy policies, with Washington expressing frustration over what it describes as Europe\u2019s selective implementation of sanctions on Russia.<\/p>\n
The Trump administration has imposed tariffs of up to 50 per cent on Indian goods, including a 25 per cent levy directly linked to India\u2019s imports of Russian oil.
