Demonstrators claim the guidelines expose upper-caste students to harassment and derogatory labeling, while denying them institutional safeguards.<\/p>\n<p>Reports said the controversy has reached the Supreme Court, where a petition has been filed challenging the UGC regulations. The plea alleges that the rules adopt a non-inclusionary approach to caste-based discrimination and exclude certain social groups from legal and institutional protection.<\/p>\n<p>The agitation has been especially pronounced in Uttar Pradesh, where protests were reported from several districts. Dissent has also surfaced within the BJP, with some party office bearers resigning in protest against the regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Observers say the growing protests and internal political dissent reflect widening social fault lines in India.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth mentioning here that the University Grants Commission&#8217;s (UGC) revised regulations, aimed at promoting equity in higher education, have sparked widespread protests among upper-class Hindus who claim the rules are discriminatory. The regulations, which include the establishment of Equal Opportunity Centres (EOCs), Equity Committees, 24\/7 monitoring, and a time-bound grievance redressal process, are intended to prevent caste-based discrimination and promote inclusive practices in institutions.
